Here below we are suggesting a few policies that can help to accelerate commercial drone logistics in the coming years.

  1. Standardization- Policymakers should raise their awareness about both the negative and positive impacts of drone delivery services in densely populated urban environments (e.g., Pros: electrification, speed, reduced CO2 emissions, Cons: safety, noise pollution, privacy). It is important to develop clear and comprehensive regulations that govern drone delivery operations. Policymakers should collaborate with industry stakeholders, including drone manufacturers, operators, hardware and software standardizations etc., to establish guidelines and standards. These regulations should cover areas such as equipment requirements, flight restrictions, and licensing processes for drone operators.

  2. Public awareness- Once the policymakers have enough knowledge and conviction about the benefit of urban drone logistics. They should help spread the awareness to greater public in order to secure the support and acceptance of drone delivery. By educating communities about the benefits and safety measures of drones, policymakers can help alleviate concerns and misconceptions. Public engagement initiatives such as town hall meetings, workshops, and demonstrations can foster dialogue and build trust between the public and drone operators.

  3. Civil Aviation Authorities- Another important consideration is airspace management. Policymakers should work closely with aviation authorities and Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) system providers, and companies to designate specific areas or corridors for drone operations. This can create “drone highways” that are separate from regular airspace, reducing the risk of collisions and congestion. Additionally, establishing an efficient system for monitoring and tracking drones can enhance safety and accountability.

  4. Education- Policymakers should encourage education and R&D in drone delivery technology, to create a future workforce. This can be achieved by providing funding and resources for academic institutions, startups, and companies to innovate and improve drone capabilities. Policymakers can also facilitate industry-academia-investment linkages to help commercialize spin-offs and other university startups.

  5. Entrepreneurship- Policymakers should wholeheartedly support drone delivery entrepreneurs to avoid monopolies in this industry. By giving support through various funding/mentorship programs specifically for the drone delivery companies or auxiliary businesses.

  6. Infrastructure- Heavy investment into physical infrastructure and support systems for efficient drone delivery is crucial. This includes establishing landing zones, charging stations, and maintenance facilities. Policymakers can also explore partnerships with private companies to leverage existing infrastructure, such as rooftop landing pads or dedicated delivery hubs.

To conclude, policymakers have a critical role to play in improving drone delivery systems. By developing robust and realistic regulations, facilitating R&D, promoting public acceptance, and investing in infrastructure, supporting startups, policymakers would unlock the full potential of drone logistics.
